Emil Jakob Schindler (1842-1892)
painter & Alma´s father

Alma worshipped her father, and was just thirteen when he died. Her loss was to mark her subsequent, particularly married, life by an almost incestuous quest for the lost father figure. Alma´s father was an artist and dreamer who paid attention to nothing but his painting. Light, rays of sunshine, dark shadows, fog and moonlight gave life to his work. He wrote on himself: »My collection of painted canvases and boards represents the small result of great inner struggles and passions, jokes begotten of bitter tears, and elegies born from smiles.«
