Martin Carl Johannes (1918-1919)
Alma´s only son

»Baby« Martin was born two months early in July 1918, after Franz Werfel, in an ecstatic night of passion in Breitenstein am Semmering, had literally »screwed« the child out of the womb. The result was a bloodbath which mother and child almost did not survive. From the very beginning, Martin was weak and sickly, which moved Alma to the certain conclusion that he could only come from Werfel´s »degenerate seed« and not that of her then husband Walter Gropius, to whom she already owed Manon´s impeccable beauty. Martin´s existence was not to be a long one; he died of progeria (senescence) after ten months.
